Be Someone’s Star this Christmas and help people in need across Wellington

For many of us, Christmas is a season of celebration – where the table is packed with food, gifts are under the tree, and there’s plenty of time to spend with family and friends. But the reality is that not everyone is able to have a Christmas like this. For thousands of people across the Wellington region who are already struggling, Christmas is a time of anxiety, uncertainty and loneliness.

Here at The Wellington City Mission, we think everyone has the right to a special Christmas and to feel hopeful for the year ahead. That’s why we’re asking you to support our Christmas Star Appeal. By making a donation or getting involved in one of our Christmas activities you will “be someone’s star” and help us reach thousands of people in need this Christmas.

What does it mean to be someone’s star?

By donating to this appeal you’ll make a significant difference in the life of a Wellington family or individual who is struggling. You will be their star this Christmas, bringing them hope, joy, and courage by showing that people in their community care.

While this life-changing support is crucial at Christmas, your help will also make sure that we can be there for people well into the New Year – seeing real and lasting change take place.

“We’ll always remember our daughter’s first Christmas. We were together as a family in our beautiful new home, which was full of love and Christmas spirit. Our Mission social worker was a big part of that, because she’d given us an amazing surprise a couple of days before Christmas. She visited us with toys and a bag of Christmas food – which we would otherwise have gone without.” – A family that The Mission was able to support last Christmas.

So the question is: whose star will you be? Please get involved today through one of our Christmas activities or by making a donation.

Last Christmas hundreds of people across the Wellington region were stars to those who are struggling. Because of this generous support we were able to feed approximately 3,000 people through our Christmas food parcels and provide close to 1,700 children with new gifts! We were also able to distribute donations to another 38 social service agencies across the region.

About the Wellington City Mission

The Wellington City Mission is a charitable trust affiliated to the Anglican Church. We have been helping those most in need in the Wellington region for over 114 years, beginning in 1904 as part of St. Peter’s Church. In 1929, an Act of Parliament established The Mission as a separate entity.

Through our four key programmes – Mission for Families, Mission for Youth, Mission for Independence, and Mission for Seniors – we provide holistic practical support to a broad range of people, from struggling families, to at-risk youth, and vulnerable older people. The assistance we provide includes food parcels, hot meals, advocacy, education, financial mentoring, and social work support. We also operate an elder care residential facility called Kemp Home & Hospital.

We are open to anyone who needs assistance – regardless of their religious belief, age, ethnicity or social background. Together, we work to identify and address people’s underlying issues to create positive outcomes.
